The Huron Women’s Shelter was founded in 1985 and was originally located on MacDonald Street in Goderich in a house rented from the Anglican Church for $1 per year. Today the Shelter is still located in Goderich but has moved to Huron Road in the building that was completed in 1994. During the 2008/09 fiscal year the emergency shelter housed 74 individual women and 41 children in 3,346 resident days, which computes to an occupancy rate of almost 92%. Crisis counsellors answered 2,757 crisis and support calls, 2,024 inter-agency calls and 1,691 business calls. The Shelter also provides individual counseling, court support and advocacy and group sessions with both women and children as well as outreach counseling in locations throughout Huron county.
We also have three Second Stage Housing sites that provide independent living in apartments for 32 individual women and 27 children. With your generous support we can continue to provide safe and affordable housing for women and children within Huron County.
